Planning to visit the Dubai Shopping Festival 2026-27? The festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, and before you book anything, the first thing to check is whether you need a UAE visa. Most visitors from India, Pakistan, Egypt and many other countries do. GCC citizens and travellers from the UK, the US, EU countries, Canada and Australia are given entry on arrival. This guide covers the festival dates, which UAE visa fits your trip and when to apply, where the festival happens, and how to claim back VAT on what you buy.

What Is the Dubai Shopping Festival?

Dubai Shopping Festival, usually shortened to DSF, is a city-wide shopping and entertainment season held in Dubai every winter. It started in 1996 and now runs for about six weeks, from early December to mid-January. Participating malls and stores run discounts, shoppers earn raffle entries for prizes, and the city adds night markets, concerts, beach venues and family events on top. It is not a single venue or a single ticketed event: you shop and join in wherever you see the DSF branding, at your own pace. The season is run by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, the government body behind Dubai’s retail events, together with malls, banks, telecom and hospitality partners. For visitors from abroad, it is a good reason to time a winter trip, because the weather is mild and the season covers Christmas and New Year.

When Is Dubai Shopping Festival 2026?

DSF 2026-27 opens on Friday 4 December 2026 and closes on Sunday 17 January 2027.

The season moves in phases:

  • Opening weeks in December: the launch celebrations, the first round of mall offers and the December weekends.
  • New Year’s Eve: the busiest night of the season.
  • January: the festival carries on after the holidays, with etisalat MOTB and DSF Auto Season running through to the final days.

Do You Need a UAE Visa to Visit the Dubai Shopping Festival?

It depends on your passport. There is no special festival visa. You enter on the same UAE visit visa or entry stamp as any other visitor.

You don’t need to apply in advance if:

  • You are a citizen of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman.
  • Your passport gets a free entry stamp on arrival, which includes the UK, the US, EU countries, Canada and Australia, among others. The full list is in our UAE visa on arrival guide.

You may qualify for visa on arrival if you hold an Indian passport together with one of these:

  • A valid US visa or Green Card
  • A valid UK visa or UK residence permit
  • A valid EU (Schengen) visa or EU residence permit
  • A residence permit or PR from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore or South Korea

A tourist visa from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore or South Korea does not count, and an OCI card on its own does not count either. Other passports have their own rules, so check your nationality in the visa on arrival guide before you travel.

Everyone else applies before flying. That includes most travellers from India, Pakistan, Egypt, Bangladesh, Nigeria and the Philippines who don’t hold one of the documents above. Indian readers can find the full breakdown on the UAE visa for Indians page.

Which UAE Visa Fits a DSF Trip?

Match the visa to the number of days you’ll actually be in the UAE, not to the length of the festival:

Your DSF tripVisa to choose
A long weekend or one week14-day single entry
Two to four weeks, for example Christmas and New Year30-day single entry
Most of the 45 days60-day single entry
You will leave the UAE mid-trip and come back30-day or 60-day multiple entry
You come to Dubai every winterThe UAE 5-year multiple entry visa may work out cheaper over time

If you’re unsure, the 30-day single entry covers the most common DSF trip. You can compare every option and the current fees on the UAE visa types and prices page.

When to Apply, and What You Need

Apply two to three weeks before you fly. Standard processing takes 1 to 3 working days once your documents and payment are confirmed, and urgent processing is available within 36 hours on working days. Only working days count, so weekends and UAE public holidays add time. The UAE National Day holiday falls in early December, right before DSF opens, so allow extra time if your trip starts in the first week. Don’t apply months ahead either: the visa’s entry window starts on the day it is issued.

What you need to apply:

  • A passport valid for at least six months from your travel date
  • A recent colour photo on a plain white background
  • A confirmed return flight ticket
  • A hotel booking or confirmed accommodation in the UAE
  • Bank statements from the last three months

Because the application asks for a confirmed ticket and hotel booking, book a fare and a room you can change or cancel, apply for the visa, and only then lock in anything non-refundable.

When you’re ready, you can apply for your UAE visa online with govr.ae. Our team checks your documents before submission, and the approved e-visa is sent to you by email and WhatsApp.

Where Is the Dubai Shopping Festival Held?

DSF is spread across the city rather than held at one site. The organiser’s partners for 2026-27 include Dubai Festival City Mall and Festival Plaza, Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, Ibn Battuta Mall, Palm Jumeirah Mall, Bluewaters, Souq Al Seef, The Outlet Village, Mercato Shopping Mall, City Walk and The Beach, JBR. Dubai Mall has also run its own DSF offers in past editions.

The Dubai Metro Red Line links Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta and Downtown Dubai, so staying near it saves time on busy weekends. Buy a Nol card at any station.

What’s On at DSF 2026-27

Open-air night market by the water in Dubai during the shopping festival season

Confirmed by the organiser for this edition:

  • etisalat DSF Nights: the evening entertainment series
  • DSF x Hatta Wadi Hub: the festival’s mountain programme in Hatta
  • DSF Auto Season: a car-buying season with partner dealers
  • etisalat MOTB (Market Outside The Box): the open-air market in January
  • etisalat Beach Canteen: new to DSF this edition, at Sunset Beach
  • Raffles and offers at participating malls throughout the season

Headline concerts, raffle prizes and event dates are published on mydsf.ae closer to the opening, so check it in the week before you fly.

The Best Time to Visit Within the 45 Days

  • For shopping with fewer crowds: the first two weeks of December, on weekdays.
  • For the festive atmosphere: the week between Christmas and New Year, usually the most expensive time to fly and stay.
  • For a quieter trip with the festival still on: January, after the first week.

Whichever you choose, match your visa to those dates, not to the full 45 days.

VAT Refunds, Receipts and Payments

Claim back VAT as a tourist. The UAE adds 5% VAT to most purchases, and visitors can reclaim most of it when they leave. According to the Federal Tax Authority, you qualify if you entered the UAE on a tourist visa, are 18 or older and are not a UAE resident. The minimum spend is AED 250 per tax invoice. Ask for a tax-free purchase at the till; you’ll get a Planet tax-free tag or a digital invoice. Before you leave, validate your purchases at a Planet desk or kiosk at the airport, and keep the goods with you, as some may need to be shown. A small processing fee is taken from each refund. Services, and goods you use up while in the UAE, don’t qualify.

Keep every receipt. Receipts are your raffle entries and your VAT proof. Each mall and partner sets its own raffle rules, so read the terms on the official programme.

Paying. Cards work almost everywhere in Dubai, including most taxis. Carry a little cash in dirhams for small stalls, and tell your bank before you travel so your card isn’t blocked abroad.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking a fare you can’t change before your visa is approved. If the visa takes longer than planned, you carry the loss.
  • Assuming a Canadian or Australian tourist visa gets you visa on arrival. For those countries, only a residence permit or PR counts.
  • Picking the shortest visa to save a little money. If your plans slide, the overstay fine is AED 50 for every day past your visa’s end date.
  • Applying in the last week of November without urgent processing. The early December public holiday shortens the working week.
  • Leaving VAT validation to the last minutes at the airport. Keep the goods and receipts in your hand luggage and build in time.

A Simple Planning Timeline

  • Six to eight weeks before: choose your dates, check your passport has at least six months left, and check whether you need a visa.
  • Three to four weeks before: book a changeable flight and hotel, and gather your documents.
  • Two to three weeks before: apply for your UAE visa.
  • The week before you fly: check the latest programme on mydsf.ae.
  • On your way home: validate your VAT refund at the airport before check-in closes.
